Are Tattoos Past Tense?

I've wanted to get a tattoo on the back of my neck for a really long time, but my friends say tattoos are too trendy and anyway the first one should be much less conspicuous. I've almost gone in to get it about five times, but reconsidered. Am I being too influenced by it being the "in" thing or am I, on the other hand, being too influenced by my friends? I feel like I'm too old (21) to be this wishy-washy.
