Did the people using the surrogates on the movie die to or just there robots?

in the 2009 film surrogates starring bruce willis at the end of the movie he lets all the surrogates die did the people inside them die to? or did they wake up on there machines because i when he told his wife to log offf because something was going to happen to the surrogates i thought that means the people that are still logged on were going to die. on the other hand who were alll those people that walked out there houses? were they people that were logged off or were they the people in the surrogates and just woke up at there homes
